    i was born in '84 when ayatollah khomeini's funeral was broadcast on state tv. i watched him fall backwards into the grave from my grandmother's lap. she said "he is gone now" and i thought about how her hands were warm through the cotton of her sleeves. today i recorded a woman selling watermelon in the bazaar. she called out the price for each slice, twenty thousand tomans, thirty, forty. it was like listening to a song with no tune, just the rhythm of numbers and her voice rising above the crowd. i wonder if my grandmother would have liked it.

    Eish, so the landlord called last night saying I owe for February's rent already, yet it's only the 10th of March. Sisi, I told him yebo, I know my dates, but the money hasn't come in from that magazine gig I did last month. He started with the threats again, you know how these Johannesburg landlords are, like they're doing us a favour. 😔 I had to remind him that the studio space in Doornfontein is also rented out under my name, and if he pushes me, I'll have to let it go too. He huffed and puffed but backed down, for now. Sisi, I tell you, this artist life isn't easy, especially when you're trying to keep your head above water in a city that's always hungry.
