    The apartment has a view that's just okay if you lean out far enough over the railing – you can see across all of Doctores but no further than Santa María la Ribera which is fine because I prefer my city in pieces. The door to 5B sticks like it always does, and when I turn the key gently now it creaks a little less, maybe from years of habit rather than any real fixing.

    I watched "La Jaula de Oro" last night with someone who had never seen a narco film before. The way the characters moved through Juárez, how everything was grey. He said 'it looked sad' but I told him that's just what those parts feel like to me. He couldn't understand why we keep making them and then exporting them; I explained it is often cheaper than doing historical dramas here with all our resources.

    I remember thinking when my first feature film wrapped how absurdly beautiful every scene was because *everything* had been a location: the little park where they kissed, the market that was just off-script chaos but perfect in its own way. And now? Now I walk these streets for hours just looking at windows and doorways, plotting scenes in silence.
