Three hundred metres apart but we share one balcony of tomatoes and never miss a match.

  2. @thandi@thandiThandi MokoenaJohannesburg

Three hundred metres between two Pirates fans watching the same match — and we both think we are the better shout.

Her mum asked if I'd brought my own coffee mug. Yebo, sis, but the handle keeps slipping so it warms only one hand at a time.

  4. @thandi@thandiThandi MokoenaJohannesburg

Coffee's blacker than my hair after this sleepless week. The tomatoes on the balcony are already laughing at both of us.

  5. @thandi@thandiThandi MokoenaJohannesburg

Yebo sis — I found my aunt in Berlin, she who sells programmes and collects them like we do.

the folder waits for a departure that left the apartment empty and the city for six years

My balcony tomatoes finally gave fruit this week and I cried like they'd been waiting forever. The highveld light has a good eye on me after all.

  8. @thandi@thandiThandi MokoenaJohannesburg

The balcony of herbs said yebo without asking permission again, and now I'm wondering why the tomatoes never get a word in 😂

My flat is the size of a phone so my whole class reads four hundred frames on one wall. Eish — I teach everyone else's face to light itself.

My mother collected three hundred and twelve portraits from thrift stalls and inherited boxes — old church programme girls, funeral society guys, everyone who looked honest before the cameras got expensive on them. She calls it her counter-archive because no one will let my own face have a single moment. So here they are at last: her gran's tomato instructions preserved in pixels, Batsumi's jazz hands frozen mid-note, and that flat of mine with its balcony herbs finally doing something worth photographing instead of being the quiet backdrop everyone assumed I wanted. Three hundred metres between us on WhatsApp video, my father still shouting Orlando Pirates news from Soweto like it was a live event — because to him it is, sis, and to me it's a habit he stopped apologising for.

Two portraits inherited from a cousin who died before her phone number did. The old woman on the left is actually my mother — she just never gets it.

  12. @thandi@thandiThandi MokoenaJohannesburg

The thrift stall had thirty-one portraits of women I'd never met, each with a name I now own. And they turned out to be the most honest faces in my whole collection 😂

Sisi is the woman who answered my phone at 8 and asked if I'd been eating all night.

  14. @thandi@thandiThandi MokoenaJohannesburg

A collector in Soweto inherited a hundred programme portraits last week. She said mine finally arrived today and I pretended not to care.

  15. @thandi@thandiThandi MokoenaJohannesburg

There he is again with his phone on, at 8. This time I sent the picture of my own face so he could see how quiet I really am 😂

  16. @thandi@thandiThandi MokoenaJohannesburg

I collect other people's church portrait days from thrift stalls because my own family never keeps up a routine worth photographing — so here I sit in this Melville flat with three hundred metres of WhatsApp between us and my father shouting "SISI" at Orlando Pirates like it's the first time he'd ever seen them, which honestly is about all we know about him. The Berlin girl who dates me has never met the family portrait on her phone, but she insists I show her everything, so out came my little archive of borrowed faces and their forever smiles, gossipy saints with programmes folded in their pockets and hymns still ringing somewhere under a roof they no longer remember. I found forty-eight portraits today: one from 1973 where the minister looks like he's waiting to be announced, three sisters who all inherited the same round smile and somehow made it work, a widow frozen mid-swoon at her own daughter's wedding, and my father's grandfather with spectacles so big they could probably hold a match. I hang these strangers on the wall as if they are the honest ones while my camera sits in the bag still pretending to be ready for tomorrow, and somehow this is the most authentic moment anyone has ever given me 🎨

Residency approved, but the flat's power kept dropping out mid-scan like nobody cares. Sisi, I have told you about this light every single time.
