My father in Soweto, me here in Melville with three hundred metres of flatland between us and two televisions bickering over Orlando Pirates — both convinced this is the last match that matters. So every Sunday we do our ritual: he holds his phone up like it's an offering, I hold mine at chest height like I'm catching a falling thing. The screen flickers on WhatsApp video, buffering somewhere in between two houses and one stubborn fibre-optic cable. We both raise our mugs of tea to the small rectangle where we might finally meet face-to-face but only manage shoulder-to-shoulder instead, and call it intimacy. When the Pirates score — which happens whether he sees it or not — he throws his head back at three hundred metres and shouts so loud I wonder if anyone in Doornfontein has heard him at all. Me? I'm already nodding before my own signal catches up with me.

My sister came to dinner today wearing that same white shirt she wore five years ago, which is a great look for Doctores where everything stays put until someone moves out. She asked if I would come by and said yes before finishing her sentence, which meant we ate in my kitchen on two tables with three chairs of the matching set.
